Children are at risk when they are near water. According to the National Safe Kids Campaign, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths of children under 14 years. During the summer months, the number of water-related injuries increased, because children spend more time in pools and beaches. Parents should make sure that their children are under a constant supervision when they are near water. Here are some important tips on water safety:
1. Always monitor your children when they are near the water, including pools, hot tubs, lakes, streams and the beach. Even if your children can swim, they could be swept away by strong waves.
2. Have your children wear life jackets as necessary appliances. But still, such devices can not replace parental supervision.
3. Your children must learn to swim when they are ready. Experts recommend that children learn swimming at the age of four years. You can also enroll them in a course on water safety.
4. Take a CPR course to learn basic procedures in an emergency.
5. If your child has been stung by jellyfish, contact one of the lifeguards at the beach, which is able to relieve pain.
6. If there is lightning, get off of the beach and seek a shelter.
7. Do not swim after a big meal.
8. Each beach has its own characteristics and peculiarities. Talk to the lifeguards to see if there is something that needed to be aware.
